Haleakala, meaning 'House of the Sun' in Hawaiian, is a massive shield volcano forming more than 75% of Maui. The summit offers otherworldly views into the massive volcanic crater, which appears more like an alien landscape than Earth. Sunrise at Haleakala is so popular that reservations are required, with visitors arriving in darkness to witness the sun emerge over the Pacific and illuminate the crater in spectacular colors. The summit is also one of the world's premier stargazing locations.
