About This Overlook
Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States at 1,943 feet, formed in the caldera of Mount Mazama which erupted catastrophically 7,700 years ago. The lake's stunning sapphire-blue color results from its extreme depth and clarity. The 33-mile Rim Drive circles the lake with more than 30 overlooks, each offering unique perspectives of Wizard Island, the Phantom Ship rock formation, and the surrounding peaks of the Cascade Range.
