About This Overlook
Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains and the highest point in Tennessee. The distinctive concrete observation tower, built in 1959, rises 45 feet above the summit and offers 360-degree views that can extend over 100 miles on clear days. The tower sits on the Appalachian Trail, and on exceptionally clear days, visitors can see parts of seven states. The summit is often shrouded in the characteristic smoky mist that gives the mountains their name.
